Mission Statement

Vassar College is committed to developing and maintaining a sustainable and environmentally responsible mode of operation, within the context of its educational mission, fiscal constraints, and responsibilities to students, faculty, staff, alumnae/i, and the local community. The Student Interns

Below is a short description by each of our interns about what their job is and how you can get involved with their work. If you have any further questions, please contact one of us. We're all very friendly!

Each spring the Committee takes applications for new Interns to fill any positions vacated by graduating seniors. If you are interested in applying, you are encouraged to speak with Lucy Johnson and/or any of the current Interns. To apply, download the Intern Application here and send the completed application to Lucy Johnson, Chair, College Committee on Sustainability, Box 0375. Please contact Lucy Johnson to find out the deadlines for this year.

Karina Costa - Recycling and Composting

I help maintain and expand on the existing recycling and composting programs on campus (such as Senior Housing and Campus Dining kitchen composting as well as battery, printer cartridge, and paperboard recycling) with the ultimate goal of inspiring the campus to reduce waste. As with any intern, I take on new initiatives as they present themselves. For example: working with the education intern on informing the faculty and administrative staff about paper use and on spreading information to the student body through ResLife and Freshmen Orientation, and collaborating with the purchasing intern on bringing more recycled and recyclable products into use. I also head the student Recycling Club and work closely with Buildings and Grounds and Greenway Environmental Services. You can email me at: kacosta@vassar.edu.

Nate Kimball, 2009 - Community Relations

My role as the community relations intern is to create a link between the Sustainability Committee and the wider Vassar community so that ideas can freely flow between the two and sustainability can facilitate projects across campus in different departments and different environmental organizations. Please feel free to contact me.

Jessica Muller-Pearson - Local Foods

As Local Foods Intern my work involves promoting the awareness and consumption of local foods on campus. My job includes working with Ken Oldehoff and Maureen King, Retreat and ACDC respectively, overseeing the farmers market in the College Center, and organizing special local foods events. If you like food and organizing (past events include Local Wine and Cheese, Harvest Dinner at ACDC and visits from local Ronny Brook Farm), get in touch with me! We also have a Local Foods Newsletter that could use some writers. My email is jemullerpearson@vassar.edu.
